Zombieland (2009)

Written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and directed by Reuben Fleishcer, Zombieland tells the story of 4 survivors of a Zombie apocalypse travelling across America to reach California and the fabled Pacific Playlands, the only place in the world reported to be Zombie free.
Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is a quite, nervous loner who leaves his apartment in Texas, with the intention of finding out whether or not his parents are still alive in Columbus Ohio.
He has survived the zombie apocalypse by living a set of rules including Cardio, beware of public restrooms and don't be a hero. On his journey he meets up with zombie killer Tallahasse (Woody Harrelson) who fills in a life touched with tragedy by killing any zombie he comes across in his never-ending search for a remaining twinkie.
It's in a supermarket that Columbus and Tallahasse meet Little Rock (Breslin) and Witchita (Stone) who leave the two stranded and steal their guns and cars. Meeting up again on the road the 4 travel to California, where Little Rock gets her dream of returning to Pacific Playlands.
Zombieland is well written and acted, for a Zombie movie. The stars are likeable in their roles and the film is fast paced. It is a typical Zombie film however. Buckets of ooze and blood, kilometres of entrails and slimy zombie corpses litter the 88 minutes it takes to watch the movie.
The chemistry between Harrelson and Eisenberg is what saves it from being just another rehash of an old story. As Tallahasse and Columbus, the two have great on screen chemistry, and their scenes together are great fun to watch.
The burgeoning relationship between Emma Stone as Witchita and Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus is cute, and while it aides lightly in the films summation of "family is where you find it" it was sort of distracting overall.
Zombieland grossed $75,590,286 (USA) in US cinemas and google and the internet are buzzing with rumours of a sequel. A second script has been confirmed by the originals writers, but I can't help but wonder how they're going to keep it fresh.
Zombieland is a fun film in your in the mood for lots of blood and guts. It's not by any means a deep intellectual film, but sometimes you just want a movie that doesn't require much from the audience beyond groans as Zombies get killed off by dropping piano's on them.
