Top 5 Nicole Kidman Movies
March 26th 2010 09:19
Early this week I put a post to see how my Top 5 lists would be recieved. I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to make them a regular feature here at The Movie Collective but based on the hit rate of my Top 5 Brittany Murphy movies I have decided to make them a regular feature. I've also decided that The Movie Collective isn't going to be just about film reviews. It's going to have regular feature posts and I'm also going to include various articles about television and movies I come across that I think are interesting.
Number 5: Malice - 1993
I've always liked this movie. It was one of Nicole Kidmans earlier Hollywood roles and I thought the chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Alec Baldwin was really strong. The movie is a suspense thriller about a young woman, recently married to Bill Pullman. The young couple dream of starting a family but that dream is shattered after Nicole is operated on by Dr Jed HIll - played by Alec Baldwin.
The atmosphere in the film is heavy and the pace is slow. The tension builds throughout the film unti it reaches the shocking and surprising conclusion. The script is a bit cliche ridden which is a shame. The film could have been so much better than it was, but that said it's still a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Number 4: The Stepford Wives - 2004
Ok, so turning a classic suspense horror film into a dark comedy was always going to attract it's fair share of detractors. But to be honest, this film is not rocket science and it never claimed to be. It's a twisted retelling of the original and the cast seem to be having a lot of fun.
Nicole Kidman as the burnt out TV executive, Bette Midler as the frazzled writer, Christopher Walken and Glen Close. You really couldn't have gone wrong with this movie. Having not seen the original until after I saw this movie I had no basis to compare it to. As a stand alone movie, it's never going to be an Oscar Winner or listed on the Top 10,000 Most Influential Movies of All Time list, but it's a bit of fun. Although I thought Nicole was fun in the movie I have to say, it really was Bette Midler who stole the show.
Number 3: Moulin Rouge - 2001
Nicole's first pairing with Australian Director Baz Lurman is the eclectic, frenetic Moulin Rouge. Set in the seedy Moulin Rouge in turn of the century France, this movie was an amazing spectacle of light, colour and sound. The script is a bit iffy and the actors are really secondary to the previously mentioned light and sound of the story.
Nicole's delivers a wonderful and thought provoking performance as Satine and her tragic demise on stage on opening night always leaves me with the giggles. Over the top, loud music and melodramatic it's still one of my favourite movies. It was for the role of Satine that Nicole Kidman was nominated for her first Academy Award.
Number 2: To Die For - 1995
This 1995 film directed by cinematic genius Gus van Sant was the film that really cemented Nicole Kidman's reputation as an actress of worth in the US. Loosely based on a true story, Nicole Kidman's Suzanne Stone Maretto is a self obsessed school teacher who longs to be a weather girl on TV. In Suzanne's world there is nothing more important than being on TV.
Enticing a student into an affair she convinces the young man to kill her husband played by Matt Dillon. While this is based on a true story, it's dark humour and Nicoles performance is amazing. Nicole won a Golden Globe in this star making film.
Number 1: The Others - 2001
2001 was a bumper year for Nicole Kidman's career. In the aftermarth of the very public ending of her 9 and a bit year marriage to Hollywood Superstar Nicole Kidman appeared to emerge from his shadow, not only intact but with the most success.
In the 2001 suspense horror The Others, Nicole Kidman plays Grace Stewart, a young mother of a young daughter living in a creepy country manner with a collection of new staff. This is a film where a look can instil terror and the sound of creaking floor board will have you hiding under your snuggie.
This is an original story, told brilliantly. The film was a remade and was directed by Alejandro Amenabar. I thought at the time that if Nicole Kidman has been nominated for The Others instead of Moulin Rouge she would have won her Oscar in 2002.
Till next time
