In the late 90's the teen slasher films were revitalised by successful franchises like Scream. It was only a matter of time before a parody came along, lampooning the teen slasher genre, and the Wayan Brothers were the most successful in launching the parody genre with Scary Movie. A film that "borrows" from successful slasher films like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and other suspense/adventure films including The Usual Suspects and The Matrix.
Scary Movie tells the story of Cindy Campbell (Anna Farris), a young high school girl whose friends are being killed off one at a time by a knife weilding serial killer. The film follows the plotline of Scream right down to the letter, with only the names changed.
The humour of the film is purile, exactly what you need sometimes to simply unwind and relax. The death scenes are funny, and it has to be said Shannon Elizabeths cheerleader Buffy has by far and away the best murder scene. No matter how many times I watch it I still cringe when Buffy purposely breaks her leg while running away from the murderer.
This is not a film that requires any form of thought. Just sit back, relax and enjoy it. Scary Movie has itself become a franchise over the last ten years, with 3 follow up films following Cindy Campbells life since the first scary movie.
