How do you get people to look at these things?

May 16th 2008 03:21
I'm sure if you are reading this you are appreciating the inrony of the title now,but let's ignore that for a minute. I'm having some real issues when I receive an Orble email that says I've had a hit count of 7 people. What's the deal?

What can I do to entice people to read? Reading is generally not popular in modern culture and just because I'm at uni studying English teaching I know people don't share the same love of reading as me!

Also, has anyone out there (not OUT THERE, obviously there will be people in the world who can answer affirmatively to this question) but has anyone reading this ever written a screenplay? If so I would love to hear about it, I'm working on my first First draft at the moment and am about halfway through so I could use some success stories or motivation.

Do i need to post more regularly? Is that a thing?

I don't want to resort to writing about celebrities and putting shiny pictures on my posts but is that the way this world works?

Help me out, I'm a man in need... a pest.

The Bone.

Don't worry about the hit count, as far as I can see you're still new to Orble and hit counts increase over time. I'm still new to Orble as well but the others who have been here longer can tell you that it takes awhile to build up a readership.

As for the screenplay, that sounds really interesting so good luck with it. I would love to write a novel one day, but I'm not sure about a screenplay. I definitely love to read and I think you'll find Orblers tend to love reading also.

Welcome and have fun with the topics you choose to write on!

Here's the thing Tom. The posts you think are going to be popular, no-one will read, the ones you write for yourself will get a massive following. There is no rhyme or reason in the blogosphere. It also comes down to luck. New posts are going up on the homepage all the time so it's a matter of your blog reaching its intended audience if they happen to be online at the time it is on the Orble homepage.

Another tip is to leave comments on other blogs so people know who you are and remember to check into your blog too.
Good luck. I'll try to revist you.

oh, yeah, I'm writing my first feature length screenplay now too. It's bloody hard isn't it?

Hi Tom - it does take a while for your blog to start appearing in search engines. In the beginning I felt like you too. My blog wasn't been read and the search engines weren't favouring my contents.

The secret apparently is to keep going. Search engines favour blogs that are older than 6 months. I enjoy reading about literature and that so I'll definitely come back to visit Seeing that you are new, it's probably also a good idea to start spreading the word by visiting other people's blogs, leaving a comment so that they can come back and visit you here as well.

It is frustrating but at the six months mark, you'll notice a lot more traffic coming in.

Hi -- I've sent you an email already but sometimes they don't get through. Would you like a domain for this blog? If so send an email to charles -at- orble.com (change the -at- into a @) and he will be able to set one up for you.

You may also need to add the email address admin -at- orblemail.com to your address book in order to receive Orble admin emails in the future.

Thanks,
Jon.

Yeah, Im with Ruby. When you research and write something thinking to yourself, "yeah man, this is great content" no one reads it. Then you slag up some utter trash and everyone comes running!

Just keep going. You've got style.

1. take Jon up on that offer to have a domain blog and choose something from the inactive list because you will get instant google traffic

2. to get traffic from within the orble community you really should try to include a pic on your post (even if its some clip art or a landscape or pattern etc) and make your title sound like a newspaper heading . . . also fill out your profile with a pic and a blurb so people get familiar with you, and as Ruby said, comment wherever you can to build a rapport

3. always fill in your tags and fully label any pics you include as they are all searchable

4. if you have myspace, facebook, msn etc then post links to your blog there and encourage your friends to comment anonymously if they dont want to join

good luck with it all!

(oh also, when people comment your blog post you should respond to them in your own comments as soon as you can . . . it becomes conversational and everyone who has commented gets an email notification to visit the page again to see what else has been said)

I'm new here too (is two months 'new?') and I found that leaving comments on other people's blogs really helps to get you 'out there' if you know what I mean.

Lots of great advice in the comments, most of it's already been said.

Being able to hang in there while you are waiting for the search engine traffic to kick in seems to be the biggest hurdle for new bloggers.

Most of your traffic will come from Orble to start with, however in the long run most of it will come from the search engines. To get more SE traffic see this post and the rest of the Blog Adviser posts.

To see how much traffic the typical Orble blog get's over time see this post.

Having fun and writing about topics you are interested in is always a good idea as well, as it will help you last the distance and you will enjoy yourself more.

Hey I have no readers either. Fear not, things will pick up. Just keep posting and remember comment, and you shall receive comment in kind. Old chinese proverb.
